NAWT DED YET
Mayumi's highest stable 3Dmark06 score in the left column, GPU overclock only:

And her GPU-Z info:

The mobo's an Intel DG31PR, which does not allow for any CPU overclocking at all. I'll see if I can snag a decent Gigabyte board sometime this year and crank up my E8400 to 3.6 or 4.0ghz on stock air cooling.
And after poking around yesterday on ibuypower.com, here's a fairly strong rig that costs exactly $600, with 3-year warranty:
NZXT Adamas Gaming Tower Case w/ 420 watt power supply AMD Athlon X2 5000+ dual-core Free games with Windows Vista and AMD Athlon processors - Halo 2, Age of Empires III, and Rise of Nations: Rise of Legend Standard certified CPU fan and heatsink Asus M2A-VM AMD 690G motherboard, with onboard sound 2 GB [1 GB x 2] DDR2-800 PC6400 memory modules Nvidia 9800 GT 512 MB 320GB SATA-II 7200 rpm, 16M cache hard drive 20X Dual format / dual-layer DVDRW drive, black Microsoft Vista Home Premium Opti-UPS SS1200-AVR Mighty Voltage Regulator
Extraneous components such as case lighting and extra hardware peripherals (floppy drive, keyboard/mouse, speakers, monitor) aside, this is a pretty nice deal for 600 bucks. It won't be overclock-friendly because of the power supply limitation, but it's nice to suggest to regular non-technical folks who just wants their rigs delivered assembled and ready-to-use.
There's an insane amount of promising titles coming out this year: Mirror's Edge, Fallout 3, Red Alert 3, Left 4 Dead, Crysis Warhead, just to name a few off the top of my noggin. Delicious.

WHAT DOES THE SCOUTER SAY ABOUT HER POWER LEVEL
Mayumi's 3DMark score:

Mayumi versus the most demanding game on the planet:

My baby's all grown up. ;-; <3 With a bit of OC tweaking and just stock cooling, she can reach 11k, if I tune the card precisely.
Her final total cost factoring in all parts bought straight from manufacturer and later replaced/resold, or just repaired and reused (like the peripherals): $702 USD
Her market value according to ibuypower.com: $1,102.
Yum.

Aside from work (which has continued to be awesome and keeping me friggin' busy), a lot has happened over the past couple of weeks. Straight off the top of my head, the most notable were singing at Tina's Valentines gig, helping out at our local charity effort at the parish the other weekend and getting to see everyone again, and Luri stepping up to bat for me.
- I missed singing. The band was great, though we all agreed that we were too busy with work/school/whatnot to make it a regular thing.
- Seeing the whole Caritas crew together again and teaching kids also brought back memories. Good, worthwhile times.
- Getting the justice I was denied with the help of a classy lady was something I never really expected, which makes it all the more poignant and sweeter. I'll never be able to say this enough, but... thank you, Luri.

I've been asked why I don't write as much anymore, and why I don't speak or chat as pitch-perfectly as my formal writing. (i.e. LOL HAY U) My reasons are pretty simple: when you work in a profession that requires a masterful judo grip of a language that isn't your native tongue, dishing out quality text on a daily basis worthy of monthly publication and read by a million jillion young whippersnappers, you tend to seek relaxation and solace in your off-time from being an idea factory and grammar nazi.
so yes, i shun capitalization liek so and lol oftenly in chat, because i find it an oddly therapeutic respite. But when it comes to official work, formal writing, and carefully crafting a high-quality story, I become Mr. Motherfucking McPerfectionist.
A year ago in college, I spent most of my free time doing creative writing bits. Nowadays, work and real-life responsibilities really do eat up most of my time, which is why I'm thankful I love my job. I get to write about my interests and have fun for the top magazine company in the country. There are literally at least four story and essay ideas knocking around in my head right now at this moment that I want to see fleshed out eventually - some TouRye (teehee), some original, others on the state of life in general.
Life in general keeps getting better and better, but not because someone hands luxuries to me on a silver platter or because I throw money at a problem. (I fucking hate that sort of mindset.) It's because I've earned my way here so far through constant effort and hard work, with the friendship of a few select talented and worthwhile people, and I plan to keep advancing forward.

I know blogs are typically supposed to be a festival of meaty LOOKIT ME AND MY OPINIONATED THOUGHTS LOL vignettes, which is probably why I rarely blog - I actually hate wanking off to myself like that. It makes me feel like a self-important prat. So I leave you all with the best-ever straightforward assessment of Me I've ever had the honor of reading, written by Someone Else. She knows who she is, she's bloody incredible. <3
You're a writer. You know what a -good- story is, and you know how to make one, and that's important. You're worth staying up 'til past 4 AM to talk to. You judge people all the damn time, fairly harshly in most cases, but also pretty honestly. xD; You know what you're capable of. You can get away with believing you're Always Right, but that's because you usually are. You try to turn stuff to your own advantage or work around it if possible instead of getting upset over things and sulking. And you do a damn good British accent. =x

Facerape is True Love
New job started today. 83 Not bad at all, just gotta get used to 10 in the morning up to 8:30 in the evening. Waiting for an internet setup too, probably by tomorrow. I've been assigned to writing the bulk of the text, especially game-related, which is excellent because that's exactly what I wanted to happen.
On the bright side, boss gave me Squooshy of the Noble House of Squooshy to take home.

She's the sweetest little poring everAAAAAAHFGSFDS--

Other things I need to get done include:
- buying new peripherals for Mayumi
- early Christmas shopping for family and friends
- talk to luridel moar
- avoid getting impregnated by Squooshy
- burning a bunch of undubs for kristiann
I have a good feeling about this Christmas. <3

she's got magic hands
After saving up and scrimping every bit of my salary that I could over this past year, outside of the most necessary expenses like air to drink, water to breathe and ceiling kittens to snack on, I finally went out and brought home a deliciously sweet young thing. Her name's Mayumi, and she cost me just a little under $600 USD. No pictures of her yet since I don't have a camera, and she's rather shy. But beneath her deceptively modest exterior, she's packing this kind of firepower:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33Ghz/4MB/1333Mhz/65NM processor 2 gigs PC800 DDR2 PC2-6400 dual-channel RAM Inno3D 7600GST PCI-E 256MB DDR3 video card SLI-ready 550W PSU with 3 fans
Along with other miscellaneous treats such as a dual-layer burner, a 7200rpm 160gig SATA drive, and a potential firewire card in the future for video editing. And this is the sort of dance she does on Neverwinter Nights 2:

Me and my little treasure are gonna have a lot of sleepless nights together. <3 And thanks to Cait, she's already been... baptized. 83

the rapture is nigh
I've recently discovered the joy of undubs, and this shit is HOT. They're basically fan efforts to take existing games with English translated versions, and combine them with the original Japanese voice tracks. You then simply burn the ISOs to blank DVDs (DVD+Rs work perfectly for me) and enjoy.
So far, the following have been done:
Star Ocean 2 & 3 Stella Deus Tales of the Abyss (requires a syncfix; both ISO and fix are provided by asmodean) Tales of Legendia Rhapsodia (Suikoden Tactics) Suikoden V Digital Devil Saga Avatar Tuner
Simply do a search for 'undub' on isohunt.com to find them. And be sure to seed once you've gotten hold of them. Until game localizers manage to pull their heads out of their asses and include dual-language tracks on all releases, these versions are the best we've got.

ten steps
1. graduate. le duh.
2. claw my way somehow towards a decent-paying job. by decent-paying i mean at least roughly 1k-2k $US a month, even if the work is repetitive and boring. dream jobs: voice acting, or working for a smart children's show like blue's clues, or becoming a muppetteer (heil henson!).
3. move into a clean, tidy and compact bachelor's apartment with only the following amenities: a toilet, a small kitchen, a bedroom, space for my rig, and a broadband connection. no television, telephone or radio - everything to keep me entertained and in touch with people can be downloaded for free/done online. maybe a cellphone for my occasional texts/emergencies. and the apartment should be located near a good library or barnes & noble, and a park area for jogging.
4. subsist on a cheap daily diet of bread, salads, and bran cereals. occasional treats of burgers and pizza.
5. minimize borloloy around the apartment, other than a few books and gifts from friends.
6. go out with friends pag may party or inuman, but usually stay at home to save money. go out exploring my neighborhood or town if it's nice and friendly.
7. invest in stocks and viable businesses on the side. freelance and write short stories and a novel on the side.
8. not consider marriage until i accumulate personal wealth of 200k-300k $US. may take several years.
9. i'm happy without kids, but if ever my life partner wants 'em, 1 or 2 at the most is enough.
10. start a game company with friends once we've saved up enough capital. at that point, development tools will be both advanced and freeware, or licensable from other companies, such as the source engine or the electron engine. planned game: an action rpg or mmo with anime-style art design/direction, but bioware-style epic storytelling/interaction and free choices, set in an elder scrolls: oblivion-ish open sandbox world.

addendum
erm, right on the heels of my last entry, kristiann asked for help with rig specs that can do both video-editing chores and gaming competently, without going over 2000 australian dollars (roughly $1500 US). i'd like some other comments on the minimum setup i came up with below:
mobo: either a standard intel 965P pci-e with dual ddr2, or an nvidia nForce SLI for future crossfire options.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (2 x 2.66GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) - less $150 US drops it down to a 2 x 2.4ghz, plus $500 gets an (overpriced) Core 2 Extreme 2 x 2.93ghz. Perhaps the 2 x 2.4ghz would be enough?
2 gigs of RAM - 2 sticks of either 1 gig ddr2-800 RAM or ddr2-667. 533 probably won't cut it.
nvidia geforce 7600 gs 256MB/256bit - i've pretty much decided on this as the best middle-of-the-road card with a good price/functionality ratio. but if you want to seriously consider gaming in the future on windows vista, a geforce 7-8 series 512MB/256bit becomes necessary.
500w psu - here's where I'm a bit uncertain. Would an SLI-ready 700w psu be a more practical option in the long run?
80-160gig 7200rpm hdd - i'm personally happy with 80gigs, but 160 or 200 gigs would be good for storing a movie/game library.
a standard firewire pci card, or any similar video capture card/cable - for the video editing tasks
other misc. peripherals: dual-layer DVDRW, etc.
windows vista ultimate - this OS is very gamer-unfriendly and matakaw sa resources at the moment, but with the DirectX 10 exclusivity, it becomes an inevitable necessity for media production and games. i still say windows xp w/ sp2 should be enough until 2009 or 2010.
krissy, wala pang peripherals for the above - mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor, etc. - but it already pushes the boundaries of 1500-1800 $AU, mostly because of the core 2 duo processor. masasabi ko lang is, don't skimp on the minimums of 2.4ghz sa core 2 duo, 2 gigs of at least ddr2-667 RAM, and the geforce 7 series 256MB/256bit. everything else is tweakable to personal preferences/budget. :> if you have the cash to burn, get the core 2 extreme 2 x 2.93ghz.

two things
A lot of the friends I know are into widely different fandoms and hobbies, and it's always fascinating to hear them talk about the stuff they're into, even if I'm not a fan of any of it myself. Just a few people off the top of my head: Jose is a pen-and-paper/tabletop fanatic, my boss Lio shows off his latest action figure or model kit each month during staff meetings, Lovely and Karl assemble and sell budget rigs when they're not running around in an MMO, Aei is a mucho talented do-it-yourself artistic professional, Krissy continues to be a devotee of the Suikoden series and other Jap PS2 RPGs, Daryl religiously follows Type-Moon's releases, and Hanna surfs 4chan for animated kiddie porn. :>
Thanks both to my own "Oh SHI-" curiosity and the friends I've made, I've pretty much dabbled in different bits of geekery as I grew up, without really becoming attached to any one new fandom or hobby permanently. Comics in grade school, first-person shooters and platformers and RPGs and acting onstage in high school, and MMOs in college. Apart from all those, only two constant hobbies have stood the test of time for me since I was a kid: singing & performing, and Star Wars fandom - the movies, novels, games, comics, everything. On the other hand, I've never been a big fan of any manga title whatsoever, save for the few Rockman X books I scavenged.
I've grown into a proponent of having decent hardware without ever paying full price for software or multimedia (movies, TV, etc) - that's what torrents and DVD burners are for. While I also grew up on Jap RPGs like the Tales series and Wild ARMS, Bioware's/Obsidian's work still stands as the benchmark of good storytelling, even if their technical execution and 10,000 bugs per game bites ass. Our eventual planned game company is leaning toward anime stylings for art direction and character designs, with Bioware/Obsidian-quality storytelling, free choices and game interaction. God help us in ironing out the bugs.
Why the random reminiscing? I've just gotta remind myself that just as there are some insane asshats on fandoms - the type who worship their imaginary animated idols and OTPs and drool venom on people who disagree - there are also perfectly regular and agreeable schmucks you can befriend who are happy doing their thing while you do yours. You're still friends, you still go out for drinks and nights on the town, magkwentuhan kayo sa isa't-isa sa mga iba-ibang interests nyo, then go home wasted and happy.
And now for the second point of interest. After her recent debut, Connie-imouto's been asking me for help on decent gaming rig specs with a price tag that won't give her parents chlamydia. So this is what I came up with:
3.4-3.6ghz Pentium 4 Extreme single-core Intel 945P Dual DDR2 PCI-E mobo (or any other model with dual ddr2 slots and pci-e; also with an additional agp8x slot if available) 2 gigs of RAM (own discretion if 533, 667 or 800) GeForce 7 series 256MB/256bit 80gig 7200rpm HDD 500W psu Windows XP Pro w/ SP2 misc. optional peripherals: dual-layer DVDRW, etc.
At a price range no higher than US $700-800, tops, this will run most apps released up to 2006 comfortably on medium-high settings, without the fuss of multicore affinity issues in certain games such as NWN2 and Rappelz. However, this is not optimal for media productivity, like video editing - a dual-core Mac would still be best for that field. Most importantly for ConCon, it'll run all her fave F2P MMOs as smooth as butter, and should last until 2010. :D
Out and about again. Oh, dissertation, you are such a cruel fucker.

A Legacy Inevitable
When I was a wee lad, I learned how to play in the driving, torrential rain that seasonally bludgeons our country with inexorably Biblical force. These wet and wild activities were actually at the behest of first my grandfather, and then my mother, who both asserted that flailing about in such epic precipitation would help to build up a stronger constitution, as long as a good scrubbing down against germs was in order afterward. Whatever my elders' mystic rationale, I recall thoroughly enjoying the feel of the heavy, buxom droplets as they savaged my body, a sensation of frigorific delight singing through my pores as I became lord of the storms high above, frolicking upon the nameless concrete streets.
It was, in short, a sensation of absolute life taking hold of me, manifested in such a simplistic and ultimately pleasurable joy such as playing in the rain, that only a child can truly comprehend.
As age and the ogrish changes and responsibilities that accompany it began to dig their fingers into my pubescent shell, I eventually moved on to different forms of gratification. There were grades to pass, masks to be worn and role-playing to be performed, contests to be won, and both lasting friendships and enmities to be built. Not to mention, computers to be dismantled, reconstructed and bent to one's unholy will, along with an information superhighway to be lost in. Along this constantly twisting road, rarely did I meet people who also knew the joys of the storms, of letting the rain and wind take you blind hostage as the lightning illuminates the uncertain, amorphous sky. But those few whom I did find that also loved the rain, even if our lives rarely intersect and give way to constant contact now, still remain close and important friends. Once, maybe twice a year, I get to talk and interact with them, and we still manage to find common ground, despite the changes we've undergone.
This afternoon, when I met up with Aei, the rain descended hard and hypnotic upon us, whence minutes earlier the sun had been beating down on my petulant, meatbag self. There is something oddly comforting, something inescapably pure, about being with a good friend that you like, while the heavens above you harmonize in an unbridled, raging downpour. Something that reminds you in a whisper to your fractured, weary soul.
Live. Let go, and live.
And so I did. And I was free again.
